Make Your Own Seismogram!

The UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory operates a network of seismometers in northern and central California. The Berkeley Digital Seismic Network is an array of high-dynamic range, broadband seismometers. Data from these instruments are transmitted continuously to UC Berkeley for processing and analysis. Using this form, you may create a seismogram for the station and channel of your choice.

Select a station
You may choose from the list of available stations in the Berkeley seismological net below.
(See this map of northern and central California for station locations.)
Occasional telemetry problems may mean that the station data is unvailable for viewing. Or a station may no longer be active.
If you encounter a problem, such as the "Cannot create seismogram -- apparently there is no data" error message, try requesting the data from an earlier or later time period.

Select a surface station channel: Choose between long-period or broadband channels.
LHZ (vertical) LHN (north-south) LHE (east-west)
Long period channels - good for viewing distant earthquakes and low frequency events (< 0.5 Hz)
BHZ (vertical) BHN (north-south) BHE (east-west)
Broadband channels - good for viewing local earthquakes and high frequency events (< 20 Hz)
Select a borehole station channel: Choose between long-period or broadband channels.
LH1 (vertical) LH2 (1st horizontal) LH3 (2nd horizontal)
Long period borehole_channels - good for viewing distant earthquakes and low frequency events (< 0.5 Hz)
BH1 (vertical) BH2 (1st horizontal) BH3 (2nd horizontal)
Broadband channels - good for viewing local earthquakes and high frequency events (< 20 Hz)
Specify the seismogram time period: You may specify up to 48 hours for broadband channels, and up to 40 days for long period channels.
Time is specified in Universal Time (UTC), which is PST + 8 hours, or PDT + 7 hours.

You may wish to refer to a the maps of recent earthquakes hosted by the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab and the USGS in order to view specific earthquakes.

beginning date UTC ( e.g. 2017/09/08 )

beginning time UTC ( e.g. 00:00:00 )

duration time of the seismogram ( e.g. for 2 days put 2d, for 24 hours put 24H, for 15 minutes put 15M, for 45 sec put 45S )

Plotting parameters: Trace length in minutes:

5min 10min 15min 20min 30min 60min 90min 120min

360min (6h) 720min (12h) 1440min (24h) 2880min (2days)

Note: for LH? channels, choose trace length 20 min or longer

amplitude scaling factor for the seismogram
( must be between 0.001 and 1000, default of 1.000 means no extra scaling, or enter 'auto' for automatic scaling )

Submit request or start over: Please wait up to a minute for the data to be fetched and plotted.
