Professor Jillian F. Banfield conducts research in mineralogy, geochemistry, and geomicrobiology. Her work is directed toward understanding reactions at interfaces involving mineral surfaces, fluids containing both inorganic and organic species, and microorganisms. Other aspects of work in our group relate to the behavior of nanocrystalline materials (such as produced in chemical weathering and by biomineralization).

She teaches a number of graduate and undergraduate courses, including mineralogy, crystal chemistry, geomicrobiology, analytical techniques, gemology, an undergraduate field course, and seminars.

She will begin her professorship in 2002 at the Departments of Earth &Planetary Science and Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at Berkeley.
