Prof. Renne is Director of the Berkeley Geochronology Center. His research includes applications of geochronology and paleomagnetism to various problems in the evolution of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Recent foci include continental flood basalts and plume-related magmatism, mass extinctions, human evolution, chronostratigraphy, tectonics, and calibration of the geologic time scale. In parallel, work on improving geochronologic methods and capabilities is ongoing. Fieldwork is principally in North and South America, and Africa, but also includes Europe and Asia.
