Professor
Ronald Carl Cohen is affiliated with both departments of Chemistry
and Earth & Planetary Science. He is also a faculty Scientist
at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,
Energy and Environment Technologies Division.
He
graduated from Wesleyan University
with B.A. in 1985 and received Ph.D. from Department
of Chemistry at Berkeley in 1991.
His
main research interests are chemical controls over atmospheric oxidants
and the role of oxidants in controlling surface UV, air quality,
and climate. In situ measurements of radicals (NO2, NO, NO3, OH,
HO2, Br, ClO, BrO), reservoirs (peroxyacetylnitrates, organic nitrates,
HNO3, HONO, ClONO2, N2O5) from aircraft, balloon and ground based
platforms. Heterogeneous kinetics of nitrogen oxides. The paleotemperature
record--chemistry and meteorology controlling the isotopic composition
of rainwater and chemicals stored in glacial ice. Development of
new, near-IR, visible, and VUV laser spectroscopies for sub-ppt
detection of atmospheric trace chemicals.
