Professor James Kirchner works at the interface between Earth science and environmental science. He has been a professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science since 1991. He is a affiliated with the Energy and Resources Group and the Berkeley Geomorphology Group. Kirchner holds degrees in physics and systems analysis from Dartmouth College, and a Ph.D. in environmental science from the Energy and Resources Group at Berkeley.

Kirchner's research spans several fields, including watershed hydrology, geomorphology, environmental geochemistry, and evolutionary ecology.
