Luna B. Leopold is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Earth & Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley. After receiving
his Ph.D in Geology from Harvard University, he joined the U.S.Geological Survey where as Chief Hydrologist, he transformed the Water Resources Division from a data agency to one of the most respected water research organizations in the world.

Over the course of his career, Leopold has maintained a vital concern for water resources. His pioneering work in the field includes writing the book, The Flood Control Controversy, and later, Fluvial Processes in Geomorphology. The latter book became the dominant force in river studies for two decades. Leopold’s hydraulic geometry of stream channels is one of the best-known concepts in the field of fluvial morphology. And a report that he wrote in 1969 has been credited with saving the
Florida Everglades from destruction and served as the model for subsequent environmental impact statements.

Dr. Leopold is the author of more than 180 publications including 6 books. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous awards and honors including the National Medal of Science.
